CHURCHYARD CROSSES OF DERBYSHIRE AND CORNWALL

CHURCHYARD CROSSES OF DERBYSHIRE AND CORNWALL

Bakewell, in Derbyshire, has a beautifully carved Saxon Cross (bottom left) in the graveyard of the parish church. Eyam (bottom right), five miles north of Bakewell, also has a fine Saxon cross with elaborate carving. Not far from Land's End is the Cornish village of St. Buryan (top left), with a fine wheel-head cross set upon four steps and a plinth. The cross bears a carved Crucifixion. A cross of unusual shape is to be found in the churchyard of Lanteglos (top right), near Camelford. It dates from the eleventh century.
