ANCESTRAL HOME OF THE WASHINGTONS AT SULGRAVE MANOR

ANCESTRAL HOME OF THE WASHINGTONS AT SULGRAVE MANOR

From 1539 till 1610 this was the home of the Washington family. At the latter date, the family fortunes having fallen, the house was sold and the Washingtons removed to Brington. About 1656 two members of the family emigrated to Virginia, and one of them became the great-grandfather of George Washington, first President of the United States. Sulgrave Manor was originally part of the property of S. Andrew's Priory at Northampton. At the Dissolution it was purchased by Lawrence Washington, mayor of Northampton.
