Ruins of Sandal Castle, a Yorkist Stronghold

Ruins of Sandal Castle, a Yorkist Stronghold

To Sandal Castle his stronghold, two miles from Wakefield, Duke Richard of York hastened in December, 1460, when news reached him that the Lancastrians had once more set the North ablaze. The fight that followed on the 30th of the month was his last. Fifteen thousand of his foes awaited his own meagre force of six thousand. There was little hope of success against such overwhelming odds, and Richard was killed, sword in hand, in the thickest of the fighting, together with many another Yorkist leader.
