BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF CLARE BRIDGE, ONE OF THE LOVELIEST SIGHTS OF THE 'BACKS'

This bridge is certainly one of the loveliest things to be seen in a tour of the "Backs," that part of the University where the colleges slope down in beautiful lawns to the river. Clare bridge was finished in 1640, and is of the same date as the earliest part of the existing college. The architect may have been Inigo Jones. The bridge is certainly worthy of him, with its delightful stone balustrading and the effective use of stone spheres on the parapet. We are looking towards the college, and the chapel of King's, next door, appears to the right.
