PORCH OF THE CHRIST'S HOSPITAL AT ABINGDON

PORCH OF THE CHRIST'S HOSPITAL AT ABINGDON

Originally this foundation was in the hands of the Guild of the Holy Cross, who had it built in 1446, and when the guild was dissolved Edward VI refounded the place as a purely secular charity in 1553. It stands next to the graveyard of S. Helen's church, and the main entrance to the Hospital is decorated with suitable texts concerning the blessedness of charity, illustrated with appropriate pictures. Within, there is a fine old hall, panelled and decorated with portraits of Edward VI and Sir John Mason, who assisted the king in the refounding.
