MORETON HAMPSTEAD'S ALMSHOUSE AND THE WHITGIFT HOSPITAL, CROYDON

MORETON HAMPSTEAD'S ALMSHOUSE AND THE WHITGIFT HOSPITAL, CROYDON

Coming into the little town of Moreton Hampstead, on the north-east edge of Dartmoor, by the Exeter road we find this row of granite arches on our right. Over the door an inscription records the date of the founding, "AN. DO. 1637." Croydon's piece of antiquity, the Hospital of the Holy Trinity (top), has only just managed to survive the many attempts to demolish it, rather than modern shops, for street widening. It was founded by Archbishop Whitgift in 1599 to provide for forty Brothers and as many Sisters.
