ALMSHOUSE OF THE WATERMEN'S COMPANY AT PENGE: WOTTON-UNDER-EDGE

Built in the year 1840, the extensive premises of the Watermen's Almshouse (bottom) are situated at Penge, in South London. The full title of the institution is "The Royal Asylum for Seamen of the Companies of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames and their Wives or Widows." There are forty-eight houses, of which three are reserved for nominees of the King, the Lord Mayor of London and the President of the Institution The upper photograph shows the old almshouse at Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire.
