WHEN THE STEAM ROUNDABOUT INVADES THE PEACE OF OXFORD

WHEN THE STEAM ROUNDABOUT INVADES THE PEACE OF OXFORD

Oxford has its S. Giles' Fair on the first Monday and Tuesday following the first Sunday in September, except when the Feast Day of the Saint happens to fall on a Monday, when the fair is held one week later. The appearance of stalls outside the front of Balliol seems most unacademic, while steam roundabouts do not harmonise with the Martyrs' Memorial. However the fair is over several weeks before the end of the University vacation, so that the noise of mechanical organs does not intrude upon the pursuit of scholarship.
