Chickens Rock and Calf Sound, Isle of Man

Chickens Rock and Calf Sound, Isle of Man

One mile south of the Calf of Man lies the Chickens Rock, and on this islet has been erected a graceful but substantial lighthouse which rises to a height of 123 feet. It is more than ordinarily a wave-swept lighthouse, for at high tide there are five feet of water over the rock. The tower was begun in 1869, and was finished in 1874, and some idea of its solidity can be gleaned from the fact that it required 3,557 tons of stone, all of which had, of course, to be carried across the Sound at great trouble and cost
