S. GEORGE'S TOWER, OXFORD CASTLE

S. GEORGE'S TOWER, OXFORD CASTLE

Only the oldest parts of Oxford Castle remain, the S. George's Tower, the crypt and the mound, all of which are early Norman. In the castle well are a number of stone balls, perhaps hurled by King Stephen's engines of war when Matilda held the fortress.
