VALLE CRUCIS, MOST BEAUTIFUL OF WELSH ABBEYS

VALLE CRUCIS, MOST BEAUTIFUL OF WELSH ABBEYS

About a mile and a half out of Llangollen, on the Ruthin road, one sees a grey ruin among meadows on the right. This is all that is left of the Abbey of Vale Crucis ("in the vale of the Cross"), which is the most complete and the most beautifully situated of any abbey in the land of Wales. A little stream comes winding down from the hill above Pentre-Bwlch to join the Dee at the head of the Vale of Llangollen and it was doubtless the source of supply for the fish-ponds which supplied the hungry brethren when Friday came round.
