WORK OF PRESERVATION AT BASINGWERK IN FLINT

WORK OF PRESERVATION AT BASINGWERK IN FLINT

Just as Neath Abbey faces the sea on the south coast of Wales, so Basingwerk faces the Dee estuary on the north, and, like Neath, is in the midst of an area that has become spoiled by industrialism. But the Board of Works has taken custody of the ruins, and excavation is being carried on, as can be seen from the right bottom corner of the upper photograph, where an earth bank has been cut through. The lower photograph shows an arch shored up with timber, and in both views a light railway can be seen. The abbey was founded in 1131.
