THE WOLFE STATUE, WESTERHAM, AND PITT HOUSE, HAMPSTEAD

THE WOLFE STATUE, WESTERHAM, AND PITT HOUSE, HAMPSTEAD

On Westerham Green (bottom) is a bronze statue inscribed: "Maj. Gen. James Wolfe, born at Westerham, Jan. and, 1727, died at the battle of Quebec the 13th September, 1759." Near by is the Old Vicarage, where the birth took place (see p. 616). In the Avenue, by Hampstead Heath, is the house (top) where the elder Pitt, first Earl of Chatham, retired in 1766, and during his illness in 1767. It was then called North End House. It has been considerably altered, but the great Earl of Chatham's room is still to be seen.
