CHEQUERS. THE COUNTRY HOME OF THE PRIME MINISTERS

CHEQUERS. THE COUNTRY HOME OF THE PRIME MINISTERS

n 1917 Lord Lee of Fareham presented Chequers, his beautiful home at Great Kimble, Buckinghamshire, thirty-eight miles from London, to the nation as a country home for England's Prime Ministers. The king's treasurer had a house here in ancient days, and the house was replaced by another in 1326, which was rebuilt in 1490. Traces of the last structure are still discernible in the present building, which dates partly from the 16th century. There are a number of Cromwell relics, for Oliver's grandson married into the estate.
