Fortifications of the seventeenth century at Portsmouth and Plymouth included citadels and gates. Those of Portsmouth have been removed, but Plymouth Citadel remains as ever. It is military architecture such as Vauban practised. Adornment was not despised, and thus the Citadel Gate of Plymouth, dated 1670, is a handsome structure, boldly sculptured with warlike trophies. | ||||||
