In 1666 the Great Fire of London occurred, and destroyed the whole of the old buildings of the school. Through the efforts of the head master (Mr. Goad) the library books were preserved, and in a few weeks the teaching work was being carried on in another building.

In Scotland are the famous schools of Loretto at Mussel-burgh, founded in 1829, a first-grade proprietary school of about 150 boys, of very high repute in football, and Fettes College, at Edinburgh, built between 1865 and 1870, with its 250 boys, of whom 50 are Foundationers after the manner of English Public Schools. The latter college was founded by money left by Sir William Fettes (1750-1836), lord provost of Edinburgh. It is now governed under a scheme dating from 1886. It possesses a fine range of buildings. At the time of Fettes's death the trust funds amounted to 166,000 pounds, and were allowed by the trustees to accumulate till an amount sufficient to carry the object of the bequest into effect was reached.
